Core takeaway
Earn the right to mention your product by solving the question in front of you first.
Reddit is a collection of communities, not one channel
Each subreddit has its own topic boundaries, posting rules, moderation style, and tolerance for self-promotion. There is no universal posting cadence or formula that makes promotion acceptable everywhere. Read the current rules, pinned posts, and recent discussions before participating.
Your goal should be to become useful in a narrow set of communities, not to distribute the same link widely. People notice when a founder understands the local vocabulary and answers the actual question. They also notice when an account exists only to manufacture mentions.
Find conversations where you have earned relevance
Search for the problem your product addresses, not only the category name. A founder selling invoice software may find better conversations around late payments, reconciliation, and freelancer cash flow than around “best invoicing tools.”
Choose recent threads where you can add information that is not already present. A useful reply can include a process, a trade-off, an example, or a question that helps the original poster clarify the situation. If your product is not necessary to the answer, leave it out.
Use a contribution-first comment structure
- Open by reflecting the specific problem, not with a generic compliment.
- Give the useful answer in the comment so the reader does not need to click away.
- Explain one trade-off or limitation; honest boundaries build more trust than certainty.
- Mention your affiliation plainly if the product is relevant.
- Invite a follow-up question instead of forcing a sales call.
Example: “I work on a tool in this area, so take that context into account. Before buying anything, I would first check…”
What usually triggers negative reactions
Link-dropping, copy-pasted replies, hidden affiliation, and answering old threads only for search exposure all signal that the community is being used. So does forcing your product into a discussion where a simpler solution would help more.
Do not attempt to evade moderation or rotate accounts. If a relevant comment is removed, read the rule and adjust. If promotion is not welcome, contribute without promoting or choose a different channel. Sustainable distribution cannot depend on pretending not to be the founder.
Measure quality, not comment volume
Track whether your comments receive substantive replies, profile visits, qualified clicks, or new language you can use to improve positioning. A comment that produces one detailed conversation can be more valuable than ten shallow mentions.
Platform and subreddit rules change. Re-check them before every campaign and avoid treating account age, karma, or posting limits as fixed universal numbers.
Pre-comment checklist
- I read the subreddit rules and the full thread.
- The answer is useful without visiting my website.
- My relationship to the product is clear when relevant.
- The wording is specific to this conversation.
- I would be comfortable saying the same thing face to face.
